You're reaching for a book when you hear a rustle on the other side of the shelf. You peek through a gap in the books, heart suddenly pounding.
You see just the edge of a flapping piece of red cloth, and a passing shadow that's shaped... wrong, somehow. There's something wrong with the head, like it's taller than it should be, or like it opens up into a fan. Either way, it moves past before you can tell what it is.

You see rows and rows of people, so many that it looks like the library is a hall of mirrors, reflecting back and forth forever. But instead of reflections, all of the people are different-- people dressed in suits and gowns, monks habits, colorful costumes, uniforms... clothes and faces shifting in and out of reality, and through it all the sounds of bells. And somewhere in that crowd, you think, is your face.
Overwhelmed, you take a step back. The haze returns. But this time, you see three figures, standing in front of the book in a neat line.
[[Who are they?]]You grab the monk's hands, and the other two figures shimmer like dust in a sunbeam, and fade away.
"Thank you," the monk says. "My name is Brother Adam. I was a lay brother at Saint Martin's University, a very long time ago. I was the school electrician,"-- he smiles at you suddenly, bright and warm-- and I cared for the bees."

[[Go inside]]"Not everything," Brother Adam admits. "Lay brothers couldn't take the same vows the other brothers did, and they didn't have a say in picking the new abbot. I would've dearly loved to take the vows, and would have if I'd lived seven more years, but I tried to follow them all the same."

He waves a hand at the wooden shelves lining the room, each displaying rows of colorful books. Above the first row of books, in stark white letters glowing against the warm wood, reads six sets of words.

[[... You might need a moment to process. Find a quiet place to relax]]She laughs. "Oh, I flew everything I could get my hands on, not just airplanes. When I got older, I started flying gliders and hot air balloons as well. But when I worked at Saint Martin's, I still only flew planes and drove my motorcycle."
She thinks for a moment. "I did a spot of wingwalking and barnstorming, but I had mostly stopped by the time I started teaching."
[[Wingwalking and barnstorming?]]"When I joined," Brother Adam says, "there were two types of monks. Choir monks took Holy Orders, and became priests. Lay brothers served through work. I didn't have the learning or the calling to be a priest, so I was Brother Adam all my life."
"Mind you, there was always work to go around, and you'd be equally likely to see a Father teaching a class or raising a cow shed. There is joy in both, to my mind."

[[What do you want?]]"These six books represent people who lived and worked at Saint Martin's," the ghost says. "One of them is for me. I'm not able to tell you anything directly about what you saw, but I was able to leave a clue inside my book."
Which book in the display represents your ghost?
[[I have a guess, but would like to hear about the other people represented by these books.]]

"Upstairs. I can show you the way, if you'd like."
[[Stairs]]
[[Elevator]]She gestures expansively around the library lobby. "With the rest of them!" she says cheerfully. "It's upstairs. Want to take the stairs or the elevator?"
[[Stairs]]
[[Elevator]]The first is a tall, gaunt man in a monk's habit. His hair is white and fluffy, and his eyes are deep-set and thoughtful. When you lean towards him, you can hear a low hum, like the sound of fluorescent lights. He holds out a hand, waiting for you to take it.
The second is a woman in a leather jacket and an old fashioned aviator cap. She has bright blue eyes and an irrepressible smile. Her coat and scarf flap in a wind you can't feel. She holds out a hand, waiting for you to take it.
The third is young, no older than the students who go here now, with dark hair, a heavy wool suit, and a serious expression. He holds a small pile of books, and flickers as you watch-- now the young man, now older. He holds out an ink-stained hand, waiting for you to take it.
[[Reach out to the monk]]
[[Reach out to the pilot]]
[[Reach out to the student]]"It was a summer trial program at first," she said. "With other schools accross the country. It was a federal program, for civilian pilots. Father Gerald-- Abbot Gerald, later, but he was Father Gerald while I was here-- worked with my husband, business partner and I to put the program together. We had a few women students that first summer." She sighed.
"But it was 1939. The war hadn't started, but the funding was for defense-- even with civilian in the program name. So we ended up an all boys college again pretty soon after, and eventually had to cut ties with Saint Martin's to teach War Training students in '42." She grinned suddenly. "But not before we moved airfields twice, planes, tools, students and all. Boy, the students never complained about college food again after moving to Idaho."
[[What sort of flying did you do?]]
[[Where is your book?]]"Not just beehives, my friend!" he says with sudden enthusiasm. "A full farm, feeding monks and students alike. There was cattle and oats and rhubarb, white leghorn chickens for eggs, geese and ducks for Christmas, pigs and pine trees... and of course, there was honey. We taught agriculture for a little while, but the farm was always there to feed us first."
"The local paper interviewed us in '39, took pictures of us working. They had us wear our habits, although of course we usually wore coveralls. Makes for better pictures, I suppose."
"The brothers here all joined with gifts and skills they used to make the community better. Father Gregory was a lumberjack, and he managed forestry, Brother Joseph ran our heating plant and water after serving in the Navy, and even our baker, Frank Stannek, who I always enjoyed helping in the kitchen and made the most use of the honey, repaired harnesses in the corner of his bakery."
"There is much you can do, with many skilled and willing. Monks are much like bees, in that regard."

[[What do you want?]]"Oh, yes, for a while my favorite parts of flying were the ones where I could get out of the plane. Wingwalkers get out of the cockpit and walk accross the airplane's wings while it's in the air. My favorite was barnstorming, though-- jumping out of the planes. It's the best feeling. Near the end, it's like you're standing still, and the earth is moving to meet you. You feel so free."
[[Why did Saint Martin's have a flying class?]]
[[Where is your book?]]"I grew up on the Colville Reservation, and considered it a home, even though I ended up spending much of my time in Washington D.C. when I was older. My mother, Matilda, especially loved to traveling to see her friends in her carriage. I went with her, and we would stop to pick wild greens when we found them. There's nothing better than fresh-picked huckleberries on a warm summer day. We kept riding together even when we both began to grow old."
"I went to school at, ah, Saint Mary's Mission school. That's where I gained the name Paschal Sherman. I was born with two names-- Frank Wapato and Quas-quay-- but a priest there believed I would go further with a more familiar name."
[[Why did you pause when saying the school's name?]]"I went to Washington D.C., and continued my studies there. I worked for a Bachelor of Laws, then a masters in patent law, and a doctorate in constitutional history studying Indian land law. I stayed in D.C., after, and worked for Veteran's Affairs. I came back to the Colville Reservation often to visit my family and friends, and after I retired, I joined the National Congress of American Indians."
"Termination policies were popular for with the Bureau of Indian Affairs and the Interior Department for a time. If passed, it would have dissolved the reservation, removed federal recognition, all federal services, collective land rights, all recognition of the tribal government... I spoke against termination to Congress."
"It was a bitter fight, within and without the reservation, especially because one of the advantages of termination was the government's promise to restore half of the reservation into Colville hands-- a half of the reservation that the Colville Confederation never surrendered the title too, and legally still owned."
"I did not live to see the fight finished."
[[What did you do before studying at Saint Martin's?]]
[[The school paper?]]
[[What do you want?]]"Yes," he says with a smile, "*The Martian.* It was an undertaking-- the first issue was 70 pages, although I wasn't editor at that time. It had fiction, poetry, news... everything you could hope for. And of course, we laid the type ourselves, and printed the order on-campus. I believe there are still some issues in the archives of this building, although if you seek them out, I ask that you look on my contributions with grace. It is a rare person who remains pleased with all their written work."
